Deer Mouse Control in Albuquerque and the East Mountains

In shortThe white-bellied mouse that carries hantavirus, common in sheds, garages, cabins and homes near open land.

Deer mice are the reason rodent work in New Mexico comes with extra care. The New Mexico Department of Health says deer mice are the main carriers of hantavirus. In March 2026 the department reported that the state had seven hantavirus cases in 2025, and three of those people died.

NMSU Extension describes the deer mouse as tan or brown on top with a white belly and throat, and a tail that's dark on top and light underneath. They live outdoors in brush and open ground and, according to NMSU, often move indoors in fall and winter. Homes that back onto open space, foothills or the bosque see them most.

Where they turn up

Sheds, detached garages, crawl spaces, cabins and storage rooms that sit closed for a while. Stored vehicles too. If your property is in the East Mountains, up in the Sandia foothills or on a big lot in Corrales, assume any mouse in an outbuilding might be a deer mouse.

  • Nests in stored boxes, drawers or old upholstery
  • Droppings on shelves in the shed or garage
  • Mice in a camper, trailer or car that sat all winter
  • Chewed seed, feed or dog food in an outbuilding

Before you clean anything

This is the part to get right. The CDC says to open doors and windows for 30 minutes and leave the space before cleaning. Wear rubber or plastic gloves. Soak the nest and droppings with bleach solution, mixed at 1 part bleach to 9 parts water per the CDC, and give it 5 minutes. Then wipe it up with paper towels and bag it. Don't sweep or vacuum. The hantavirus cleanup guide walks through it step by step.

If the space is heavily soiled, or it's an enclosed crawl space or attic, hire it out. Droppings cleanup explains what a provider can do.

Trapping and sealing

The state rodent guide says deer mice shouldn't be trapped alive with glue boards or multi-catch traps. Snap traps are the usual tool. After the mice are out, the provider seals the building with hardware cloth and metal. Outbuildings are often the hardest part, since shed doors and siding rarely fit tight.
