Deer Mouse or House Mouse? Telling Them Apart

SummaryBelly, tail and where you found it: the quick way to tell which mouse you have.

Look at the belly and the tail. A deer mouse has a bright white belly and a tail that's dark on top and white underneath. A house mouse is grayish brown all over with a lighter, cream-colored belly and a mostly bare tail. Where you found it helps too: sheds, cabins and garages near open land lean deer mouse.

It matters because deer mice are the hantavirus carrier in New Mexico. Both get indoors, both leave droppings, and the cleanup should be careful either way. But knowing which one you have changes how a provider traps and how seriously you treat a closed-up shed.

Side by side

A dead mouse in a trap is easiest to check. Wear gloves and don't handle it more than you need to.

  • Deer mouse: tan to brown on top with a sharp line to a white belly and throat
  • Deer mouse: two-toned tail, dark above and white below
  • Deer mouse: larger eyes and ears for its size
  • House mouse: grayish brown on top, lighter cream or gray below
  • House mouse: tail mostly bare and one color

Where you found it

The state rodent guide says house mice are widespread in New Mexico, in houses, barns and outbuildings, in town and country. It describes deer mice as common in the state and quick to enter homes and outbuildings. NMSU Extension calls the deer mouse a field rodent that seldom lives indoors but turns up inside, mostly in cold weather.

So a mouse in a kitchen in the University area is more likely a house mouse. A mouse in a well house in Edgewood or a garage that backs onto open mesa in Mesa del Sol has a good chance of being a deer mouse. Don't count on location alone.

Can you tell from droppings?

Not reliably. Mouse droppings look much alike: small, dark, pointed, about the size of a grain of rice. Fresh ones are dark and soft; old ones are gray and crumbly. That tells you about timing, not species. Treat every pile as if a deer mouse left it, and follow the hantavirus-safe cleanup steps.

Why it changes what you do

The state rodent guide says glue boards and multi-catch live traps shouldn't be used for deer mice, because a trapped mouse urinates and defecates in the trap and can release virus into the air. Deer mice caught in snap traps should be disinfected and double-bagged. Mice caught alive shouldn't be released outside.

Deer mice also mean extra care in confined spaces. NMSU recommends a HEPA or N-100 respirator in tight areas. If the problem is in a camper, crawl space or attic, hire it out.

The fix is the same

Either way, the long-term answer is trapping and sealing. NMSU says mice can fit through a hole about a quarter inch wide. Close those gaps with hardware cloth or metal, not steel wool. See house mouse control and deer mouse control.

Size and habits

Both mice are small enough to fit through a quarter-inch gap, so size won't settle it. Behavior helps a little. House mice can live their whole lives indoors, nest in walls and cabinets and breed year round with steady food. Deer mice are outdoor mice that come inside, especially in cold weather, and they favor outbuildings and rooms that sit unused. A mouse that's been in your kitchen all summer is probably a house mouse. A mouse that showed up in the shed in November could be either.

If you catch one and still aren't sure, take a photo of the belly and tail and ask the provider when you call.

What to do with a caught mouse

Put on gloves, spray the mouse and trap with disinfectant, wait 5 minutes and double-bag the mouse. The CDC says a snap trap can be reused after soaking in disinfectant for 5 minutes. Look at the belly and tail before bagging if you want to know which mouse it was, but don't handle it more than you need to. Wash gloved hands, then bare hands.

If you're catching mice in an outbuilding, read deer mice in garages and sheds for the cleanup and sealing steps.

Where each one tends to show up around town

House mice turn up everywhere, from apartments near UNM to new homes on the mesa. Deer mice cluster where houses meet open land: the foothills, Sandia Heights, Four Hills, the Southwest Mesa and the East Mountains. A house in the middle of the Heights can still get a deer mouse if it backs onto an arroyo. Treat location as a hint, and treat cleanup the same way no matter which mouse you think it is.

Also asked

Do house mice ever carry hantavirus?

Health agencies name the deer mouse as the main carrier. The city's health page notes other mouse species have been found infected, so clean every mess carefully.

Is a white-footed mouse a deer mouse?

It may be a close relative. Treat any mouse with a white belly and bicolored tail with deer mouse precautions.

Why shouldn't I use glue traps?

For deer mice, the state guide says a mouse stuck in a trap soils it and can release virus. Glue boards also catch pets and wildlife.

What time of year do deer mice come inside?

NMSU says rodents tend to move in during fall and winter.
