Dead Rodent and Odor Removal in Albuquerque

In shortFinding and removing a dead mouse or rat, cleaning the spot and closing the gap it used.

A dead mouse in a wall or a pack rat under the floor makes itself known within a day or two. The smell is the giveaway, and it tends to come from the warmest part of the house. Sometimes it's a mouse that ate bait and crawled into a void. Sometimes it's one that got trapped behind a cabinet.

Handling a dead rodent in New Mexico calls for the same precautions as droppings. The CDC says to wear gloves, spray the rodent and the area with disinfectant, wait 5 minutes, then double-bag it. In plague areas, the city adds a warning about fleas.

What a thorough job includes

Removal is more than pulling out the body. A full job covers:

  • Tracking the smell to its source, including walls, ceilings, vents and appliances
  • Opening the smallest access point needed, often from a closet or cabinet
  • Disinfecting the carcass and the area, then double-bagging
  • Cleaning fluids and staining from insulation or drywall
  • Treating the odor, sometimes with an enzyme product
  • Finding out why it died there and sealing the way in

Step by step

The technician narrows the area by smell and by where flies gather, then checks the likely spots first: behind the refrigerator and dishwasher, inside the cabinet toe-kick, in the HVAC return, in the attic over the warm rooms. Sometimes a small cut in drywall is needed. Before touching anything, they soak the carcass with disinfectant, then bag it, bag it again and clean the spot.

The last step matters most. A dead rodent in the wall means a live one got in. The provider should find the gap and close it, or you'll repeat this in a few months. See rodent exclusion.

Why it's harder in Albuquerque

Dry air helps and hurts. A carcass dries out faster here than in a humid climate, so a small mouse smell may fade in a week or two. A pack rat is larger and lasts longer. Flat-roof cavities and block walls are hard to open, so finding the exact spot saves real repair money. And in the foothills and the East Mountains, fleas on a dead rodent are a plague concern. The City of Albuquerque collects rodents and rabbits that died without visible injury in those areas for testing, so call 311 before you handle one outdoors.

When the smell is in the car

Cars are a common spot, especially if a pack rat nested in the engine bay or a mouse got into the cabin air filter box. The CDC steps for vehicles start with opening the hood, doors and trunk for 20 minutes and disconnecting the battery before working in the engine compartment. Replace the cabin air filter if nesting reached it. Mice in RVs and campers has more on vehicles.

Why dead rodents end up in walls

Mice die where they nest or travel. That's often inside a wall, under a floor, in an attic corner or behind an appliance. Poison makes it more likely, since a mouse that eats bait keeps moving for a while before it dies. Trapped mice that aren't checked can also become an odor problem. A flat roof or a cooler duct can trap one in a spot you can't reach.

The heat matters too. Odor from a carcass near a warm wall or ceiling in summer spreads farther than one in a cool basement.

What you can try first

Follow the smell and look for flies, which often gather near the source. Check behind the refrigerator, under the dishwasher, inside the toe-kick under base cabinets, in the HVAC return and in the garage. If you find it, wear gloves, spray it with disinfectant, wait 5 minutes and double-bag it, as the CDC says. If you can't find it or it's inside a wall, that's the point to call.

Questions

How long will the smell last if I leave it?

It depends on the animal's size and where it is. A mouse may fade in a week or two in dry air. A larger rodent can take longer.

Did poison cause this?

Often. A mouse that eats bait can die inside a wall. That's one reason many providers prefer traps indoors. See rodent poison, pets and wildlife.

Can I just use an air freshener?

It masks the smell for a while. Removing the carcass and cleaning the spot is the fix.

What does dead rodent removal cost?

Fixr lists dead rat removal at about $150 to $250 nationally. Opening walls and repairing drywall costs more.

Should I report a dead rodent in my yard?

If you're in an area where the city tests for plague and the animal died without obvious injury, call 311 and don't touch it. Mice aren't collected.
