Rodent Control in Belen

LandmarksBelen Harvey House Museum, BNSF rail yard, Rio Grande, Interstate 25

Belen sits on the west bank of the Rio Grande about 35 miles south of Albuquerque, at around 4,810 feet. It was founded in 1740 and incorporated in 1918. The "Hub City" nickname dates to 1907, when the Santa Fe railway finished a line through town, and BNSF still refuels trains here. The Harvey House next to the depot is now a museum. The 2020 census counted 7,360 residents.

Older downtown buildings, valley farms and newer homes on the edges all see mice.

Railroad-era buildings

Downtown buildings from the early 1900s have old foundations, basements and shared walls. Businesses there should keep a regular program. See commercial rodent control.

Valley farms and gardens

Irrigated land along the river means gardens, orchards and livestock feed. House mice and deer mice both turn up in barns and sheds. Most "rat" calls in the valley are pack rats or large mice. Get anything rat-sized identified before choosing traps. The state rodent guide places roof rats generally in the southern Rio Grande Valley, so don't assume.

  • Feed in metal cans with lids
  • Fallen fruit and garden waste cleared in fall
  • Woodpiles off the ground and away from the house
  • Shed and garage doors sealed at the bottom
