Cedar Crest sits along the eastern base of the Sandia Mountains in Bernalillo County, at about 6,779 feet. NM 14, the Turquoise Trail, runs through it, and the Tinkertown Museum is a local landmark.

Homes sit among piƱon and juniper, many on wooded lots with sheds and decks. Rodent calls up here are mostly deer mice and pack rats.

Plague and hantavirus

The City of Albuquerque says most plague and tularemia cases in Bernalillo County come from the East Mountains, and it collects rodents and rabbits that died without visible injury in East Mountain communities up to the county line. Call 311 and don't handle the animal. The New Mexico Department of Health adds: keep pets on flea control, keep hay, wood and compost away from the house, and use insect repellent outdoors.

Deer mice and cabins go together. Air out any closed building before going in, and never sweep droppings. Plague, fleas and pets has more.

Wooded lots and decks

Decks, woodpiles and stacked lumber are pack rat favorites. Keep firewood on a rack 18 inches off the ground and away from the house. Check under decks and in crawl spaces for stick nests. Cabins and second homes benefit from cabin and shed rodent control and a seasonal check.

Yes. The city's testing area includes East Mountain communities up to the Bernalillo County line. Call 311.

We only use the cabin on weekends. How do we keep mice out?

Seal it well, store bedding in bins, set snap traps before you leave and consider a monitoring plan.

Is pack rat nest cleanup risky?

It can carry hantavirus and fleas. Soak it with disinfectant first, wear gloves and long sleeves, or hire it out.
